President William Ruto has pledged Ksh500 million for the facelift of the Lodwar airstrip, a move aimed at improving air transport and boosting economic activity in Turkana County.

The President made the announcement on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, while addressing residents during the annual Turkana Cultural Festival, popularly known as Tobongu’lore. He said the upgrade would enhance connectivity between Turkana and other parts of the country.

Ruto noted that Tobongu’lore has grown into an international event, adding that improving the airstrip infrastructure will enable more foreign visitors to attend the festival with ease.

He further stated that strengthening aviation infrastructure in remote regions is part of the government’s broader development agenda to unlock economic potential and attract investment. The President emphasized that the Lodwar airstrip plays a critical role in supporting humanitarian operations, business activities, and government services in the region.

Tobongu’lore is an annual cultural festival that brings together communities in Turkana and Ateker region to celebrate culture, unity, and development, while also serving as a platform for national leaders to outline key development commitments for the region.
