Detectives in Turkana County are investigating a tragic incident in which a 35-year-old woman allegedly killed her two young sons before taking her own life in Nachukui area, Turkana North Sub-County.
According to police reports, the woman, identified as Hellen Akai, is suspected to have strangled her two sons, aged four and two, before burying them in a shallow grave near her home late Sunday night.
Police said Akai was alone with the children at the time of the incident. After burying the minors, she is believed to have returned to her house, where she hanged herself from the roof truss using a rope. Her lifeless body was discovered hours later.
Concerned neighbors alerted authorities after noticing unusual silence from the homestead. The children had not been seen playing as usual, and Akai had not been spotted throughout the day.
Upon receiving the report, police officers from Nachukui visited the scene, exhumed the children’s bodies, and moved them together with their mother’s remains to the mortuary for postmortem examination.
Residents described Akai as a calm and reserved woman who had not displayed any signs of distress or mental instability prior to the tragedy.
The motive behind the incident remains unclear as investigations continue.
Police have urged the public to seek counseling and psychosocial support when faced with distress, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness in preventing such tragedies.
