Contractors in Turkana who worked under the Equalisation Programme are raising alarm over delayed payments, with many claiming they have gone for more than a year without compensation despite completing their projects.

The contractors say they have made repeated visits to relevant offices seeking answers, but their pleas have largely gone unanswered. Out of options, they are now appealing directly to Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai to intervene and help resolve the stalemate.

The Equalisation Fund was intended to bridge gaps in infrastructure and services, run parallel development programmes alongside county initiatives, and provide upfront resources to accelerate growth. However, contractors now argue that persistent delays in payment point to negligence within the management of the programme.

Some accuse the current programme director of being unresponsive and unwilling to address their concerns.

In response to the stalemate, the contractors have announced plans to stage a public demonstration next week and invite the Senate and National Assembly to intervene in order to secure their long-overdue payments.
