On April 3, 2025, Turkana County Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai, Napotikan, led a major relief initiative to support victims of the February 22nd Todonyang’ massacre. The governor delivered 17 motorized boats, fishing equipment, and 1,000 bags of maize to affected families, aiming to restore livelihoods and provide much-needed assistance.
Addressing the residents in Todonyang, Governor Lomorukai seized the moment to affirm his administration’s commitment to the people, positioning himself as the only leader actively working to rebuild lives in the wake of crisis.
“While others only offer empty rhetoric, we are here with tangible solutions. We are delivering real assistance that directly benefits our people,” he declared said.
The provision of motorized boats and fishing equipment is seen as not just a relief effort but also a political masterstroke, aimed at reinforcing Lomorukai’s influence in Turkana North. The region being one of the vote-rich bloc.
“Our people depend on fishing as a key economic activity. By providing these boats and equipment, we are not only addressing immediate needs but also ensuring that they have the means to sustain themselves economically in the long run,” said Lomorukai.
The 1,000 bags of maize distributed to families affected by the Todonyang’ massacre also underscored the governor’s ability to rally resources for his people. Lomorukai took the opportunity to call out leaders who, according to him, have failed to prioritize the needs of their constituents.
“Leadership is about action, not just words. We must stand with our people, not just during elections but every day,” he remarked.
His tour in the region comes in the wake of Lomorukai severing ties with former Turkana County Assembly Speaker Christopher Nakuleu, whose position was handed to Charles Lokiyoto—another political figure from the region.
Further strengthening his position, the governor has now joined forces with former Turkana Senator John Munyes, who has declared his intention to vie for the senatorial position in the 2027 elections. This political alliances signals a strategic realignment as Lomorukai seeks to solidify his influence in Turkana North.
On the other hand, Turkana North MP Ekwom Nabuin, a known political rival of the governor, has openly declared his intention to unseat Lomorukai in the 2027 general election. With the battle lines drawn, the governor’s latest development projects in Turkana North are not just about relief—they are a clear statement of his continued political dominance and a direct challenge to his opponents.
The big question remains: Will the region enter into a political bromance with Governor Lomorukai and participate in ensuring his re-election?
