On Friday morning, suspected bandits believed to be from West Pokot County staged a daring raid in Kainuk, making away with hundreds of goats. One herder has been reported missing and is feared to have been kidnapped by the attackers and taken to an unknown location.
In a retaliatory move, angry youth from Kainuk went to River Malimalite and seized 35 cows and 50 goats belonging to Pokot herders. They then drove the livestock to the Kainuk Police Station, demanding the return of the previously stolen animals and the missing herder before releasing the confiscated livestock.
However, Chief Inspector of ASTU Kainuk, Mr. Peter Wahome, and Deputy OCS of Kainuk Police Station, Mr. Victor Kiplagat, ordered the return of the Pokot livestock — despite no recovery of the earlier raided goats or the missing person.
This decision has sparked outrage among Kainuk residents, who accuse the officers of bias and failing to act in the community’s best interest. They also criticized the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) stationed at Loyapat for their silence and inaction during the raid.
