Authorities recovered the bodies of a man and a woman in Todonyang on Wednesday evening as efforts intensified to locate missing Kenyans following the brutal killing of more than 20 fishermen in the area.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed the discovery just hours after raising concerns that Ethiopian authorities were hampering search operations due to poor communication with their Kenyan counterparts.
“The bodies recovered belong to a man and a woman, estimated to be in their late 20s or early 30s,” Murkomen stated in an update.
He assured the affected families that the government remained committed to finding the missing individuals and expressed solidarity with those grieving their loved ones.
Murkomen also acknowledged ongoing communication challenges with Ethiopian authorities but commended them for granting Kenyan officials access to the region, which has facilitated recovery efforts.
“We appreciate the Ethiopian government for allowing our teams to operate in the area, aiding both the recovery process and the continued search for missing persons and boats,” he noted.
The government, he added, is actively working to account for all those unaccounted for while engaging Ethiopian officials to restore lasting peace along the border. He also promised to provide further updates as the situation develops.
The attack, which occurred on Saturday, February 22, at the Todonyang border point in Lake Turkana, left over 20 fishermen dead, reportedly at the hands of the Dassanech militia. While the motive remains unclear, initial reports suggest it may have been a retaliatory strike following the killing of three Dassanech fishermen in Turkana earlier that day by a suspected bandit.
