President Donald Trump demanded an apology from the bishop of Washington after she begged him to have mercy on the LGBTQ+ and migrant workers amid an inaugural prayer service.
Referring to Trump’s belief that he was saved by God from assassination, Rev. Mariann Budde said, “You have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now.”
“The vast majority of immigrants are not criminals,” she continued. “They pay taxes and are good neighbors… may I ask you to have mercy Mr. President on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away.”
Trump, alongside Republican lawmakers and Fox News hosts and contributors, was outraged at the religious leader for “ranting like a lunatic” and “lecturing” the president, which some felt was “misusing religion.”
Some lawmakers even demanded that the “woke” New Jersey-born bishop be deported.
After the service, Trump told reporters, “I didn’t think it was a good service” and “they could do much better.”
Later in the evening, he issued a scathing review on Truth Social of the “so-called Bishop,” whom he accused of being a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater.”
“She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way. She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart,” Trump wrote.
He continued to scold her for failing to mention migrant crime that has occurred in the U.S., including murder.
