Uganda agrees to accept US-rejected migrants despite heavy refugee burden

Uganda has reached an agreement with the US to receive deported migrants – under the condition that the deported individuals have no criminal records and are not unaccompanied minors.

In a statement, Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that “the two parties are working out the detailed modalities on how the agreement shall be implemented.”

The ministry also noted that Uganda would prefer to take in deportees of African origin.

In July, the US had already deported five men with criminal backgrounds to Eswatini and sent eight others to South Sudan.
