MPs Kick Out Equalisation Fund Board Over Misuse of Billions Meant for Marginalized Communities

MPs have kicked out the Equalisation Fund board over concerns about the misuse of billions of shillings meant for basic services in marginalized areas.
The board was accused of overstepping its constitutional mandate by financing projects beyond its scope—such as cabro paving, street lighting, staff housing, and kitchen renovations—instead of focusing on essential services like water, roads, health facilities, and electricity as outlined in the Constitution.
The parliamentary committee also flagged inconsistencies in the implementation of several of the 310 ongoing projects, raising concerns over the deviation from proper utilization of funds.
The National Assembly’s Finance and National Planning Committee, chaired by Molo MP Kuria Kimani also questioned how the Fund reported that a bridge project in Turkana South Constituency was only 2% complete, while the area MP, Dr. Ariko Namoit—who also serves as the committee’s vice chairperson—stated it was 40% complete.
“This board is presenting misleading reports that cast doubt on the accuracy of its project data,” Dr. Ariko said.
He added, “The information presented to the committee is fundamentally flawed. This board has ignored the law and is implementing projects that were never envisioned.”
