Turkana Central MP Emathe Namuar Slams Persistent Power Outages in Lodwar, Cites Ruto’s Unfulfilled Turkwel Grid Promise

Turkana Central MP Emathe Namuar has raised serious concerns over the persistent electricity outages in Lodwar Municipality, warning that the prolonged power crisis is crippling businesses and disrupting normal household life in Turkana County’s economic hub.

The legislator described the situation as “unacceptable and indefensible,” noting that frequent blackouts have severely affected commercial activity, communication, and essential services across the town.

“The power crisis in Lodwar Municipality — the economic hub of Turkana County — is unacceptable and indefensible. Constant outages are crippling businesses, disrupting communication, and making normal household living impossible. This is a serious failure of public service,” Namuar said.

He further expressed frustration over what he termed as unfulfilled commitments by the government, pointing out that President William Ruto’s promise to connect Lodwar to the Turkwel Gorge hydropower grid remains unrealised more than two years later.

“New generators were delivered <2 years ago, and the long-promised connection to the Turkwel Gorge hydropower grid by President William Samoei Ruto remains overdue.” he said.

According to the MP, the leadership of Kenya Power has already been formally notified of the crisis. He specifically mentioned KPLC Chief Executive Officer Eng. Joseph Siror and Lodwar Area Manager Okode Sila, noting that new generators were delivered less than two years ago but have failed to resolve the persistent outages.

“KPLC must immediately end this disruption and restore reliable electricity to Lodwar. The people deserve better — and they deserve it now,” he added.

The ongoing power instability has drawn growing concern from residents and business owners, many of whom say the outages have increased operating costs and undermined economic growth in the region.
