Learners at Lokori Primary School in Turkana County are set to benefit from enhanced digital education following the donation of tablets and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment by Save the Children in partnership with Nokia. The initiative marks a significant milestone in efforts to bridge the digital divide in one of Kenya’s most remote regions.

The support package includes learner tablets, a projector, a teacher guide computer, a charging centre, as well as the full renovation and equipping of an ICT laboratory at the institution. The intervention is expected to improve access to digital learning resources and strengthen technology integration in classroom instruction.

Save the Children’s Education Advocacy and Policy Coordinator, Samuel Wamalwa, said the programme is designed to address education inequality by equipping learners with essential digital skills and expanding opportunities for knowledge sharing beyond traditional classroom settings. He noted that improved infrastructure would help unlock learners’ innovative potential, adding that Lokori Primary School is serving as a pilot site for possible expansion to other schools.

Programme Support Assistant Charles Elimlim emphasised that the initiative intentionally targets remote and marginalised schools that have historically lagged behind in technological advancement. He said early exposure to digital tools would empower rural learners to compete effectively in an increasingly technology-driven world.

Turkana East Sub-County Education Officer Alex Ruto welcomed the development and urged the school community to maximise utilisation of the donated equipment. He underscored the need to integrate technology into daily learning processes to enhance education outcomes.

Lokori Primary School Headteacher Alfred Edapal expressed appreciation for the support, highlighting the strong collaboration between the school, Save the Children, and Nokia as key to the project’s success. He revealed that internet access at the school has already improved, with plans underway to establish a library to further support learning.

Meanwhile, the school’s Board of Management called for additional assistance in strengthening internet connectivity and maintaining the ICT infrastructure. Members also noted that neighbouring schools could benefit from access to the facility, potentially expanding the impact of the initiative across the wider community.
