Contractors in Turkana County who undertook projects under the Equalisation Programme have finally received full payment of their outstanding dues from the County Government of Turkana, bringing relief to dozens of firms and workers affected by prolonged delays.
In September last year, the contractors had threatened to stage a public demonstration over delayed payments, with many saying they had gone over a year without compensation despite having completed their projects.
At the time, the contractors appealed to Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai to intervene and resolve the stalemate, warning that the delays had pushed some businesses to the brink of collapse.
The Equalisation Fund was established to bridge infrastructure and service delivery gaps in marginalised areas, run parallel development programmes alongside county initiatives, and provide upfront resources to accelerate socio-economic growth.
The settlement of the arrears marks a significant step in restoring confidence among contractors and stakeholders involved in development projects across the county.
