Fresh details have emerged following a closed-door meeting between ODM party leader Raila Odinga and a delegation of leaders from Turkana County.
The high-profile gathering, held on Monday, January 27, 2025, brought together influential figures led by former Turkana Governor Josephat Nanok, CS Beatrice Askul, and MPs John Namoit and Paul Nabuin, among others.
According to insider sources, Raila Odinga tasked Nanok and CS Askul with a critical mission: mediating the escalating conflict between Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai and County Speaker Chris Nakuleu. This directive comes amidst growing tensions within the county’s leadership, threatening to derail progress and unity.
The political friction stems from last month’s dramatic fallout when an impeachment motion against Speaker Nakuleu was thwarted. The motion failed to proceed after the county assembly clerk, who was expected to officially receive the impeachment documents, was conspicuously absent. MCAs alleged that the clerk’s absence was a calculated move orchestrated by the Speaker to frustrate their efforts.
In retaliation, furious MCAs vowed to escalate their campaign, not only targeting Nakuleu’s removal but also seeking the impeachment of the clerk for dereliction of duty and obstructing assembly processes. The assembly has since been engulfed in heated debates, with tensions running high.
Reports indicate that at least 38 MCAs have already signed the motion to impeach Speaker Nakuleu, demonstrating overwhelming support for the move. The situation has created a deep rift in county leadership, prompting Raila’s intervention to restore order and broker a truce.
