The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party primaries in Turkana County have once again highlighted the shifting political alliances in the region, with Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai’s preferred candidates securing victories in both Nanam and Lakezone wards.
In Nanam Ward, it is alleged that Governor Lomorukai backed Hon. Cosmas Longor Napeikar, while Turkana West MP Daniel Epuyo Nanok threw his support behind Sarah Akai Ekuwam, the widow of the late Deputy County Assembly Speaker, Hon. Philip Ekuwam. After a tightly contested race, Hon. Napeikar clinched the ticket, signaling a major win for the governor.
Meanwhile, in Lakezone Ward, Lomorukai is reported to have supported Hon. John Namesek Erot. His closest rival, Hon. John Meyan Imanamanangor, received backing from former Turkana North MP and former County Assembly Speaker, Hon. Christopher Doye Nakuleu. Once again, the governor’s candidate carried the day, reinforcing his grip on grassroots politics.
The double victories are being interpreted by analysts as a strong show of Lomorukai’s growing influence within Turkana politics, despite facing challenges from seasoned leaders within the ruling UDA party. The contests were seen less as routine primaries and more as a battle for supremacy between Governor Lomorukai on one side, and Turkana West MP Hon. Epuyo Nanok together with former Turkana North MP Hon. Nakuleu on the other.
Observers now say the outcome of these ward primaries could set the tone for future political realignments in Turkana, especially as the county gears up for the 2027 general elections.
