The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a WhatsApp-based system that allows taxpayers to file returns easily using their phones (no need to log into iTax manually.)

Here’s a clear step-by-step guide.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Save KRA WhatsApp Number

Save this number: +254 711 099 999

2. Start the Chat

Open WhatsApp

Send “Hi” or “Menu”

This activates the Shuru Chatbot

3. Select the Service

The chatbot will display a menu

-Choose the type of return you want to file:

-Turnover Tax (TOT)

-VAT

-PAYE

-Rental Income-

-Tax Compliance Certificate (TCC)

4. Log In & Verify

Enter your KRA PIN

You’ll receive an OTP (One-Time Password) on your registered phone

Enter the OTP to verify your identity

5. Review Your Tax Status

The system:

-Checks your filing history

-Shows any pending returns or obligations

6. Fill Your Return

Follow prompts to enter details such as:

-Income or sales

-Tax category

-Period of filing

The chatbot guides you step-by-step (very simple)

7. Submit & Pay (if required)

Confirm details and submit your return

If there’s tax due:

You’ll receive payment instructions (e.g., via mobile money)

8. Confirmation

You’ll get:

-Filing confirmation

-Reference number

-Option to download documents (if applicable)
