Lodwar, Turkana County – In an effort to stimulate economic growth and create a more business-friendly environment, Turkana County Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai has instructed the Ministry of Trade to strengthen collaboration with the private sector. This initiative aims to enhance partnerships between the government and local businesses, fostering inclusive economic development.

The directive was announced during a high-level business forum on February 5, 2025, organized by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Turkana Chapter in partnership with the Islamic Foundation for Integrated Programmes (IFIP).

Following a follow-up meeting on February 17, 2025, the committee established mechanisms to advance this agenda.

At the forum, attended by CECM for Trade Ms. Rose Aite, KNCCT-Lodwar Chapter Chairperson Mr. Justus Amoni, and IFFIP Founder Mr. Yassin Yusuf, the committee made a key resolution to fully commit to integrating the business community into all commerce-related policy decisions.

For years, international organizations seeking to set up value addition projects in Turkana have faced challenges due to limited engagement with local enterprises.

The forum, held at the Lodwar Vocational Training Centre, brought together government officials, business leaders, and key institutions—including the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Kenya Power—to discuss strategies for strengthening public-private partnerships. Participants explored ways to enhance infrastructure, simplify regulatory frameworks, and create a more conducive business climate.

Governor Lomorukai emphasized the vital role of public-private collaboration in addressing infrastructural challenges and improving service delivery. By reinforcing engagement with investors and development partners, the county aims to attract investment, stimulate industrial growth, and build economic resilience.

Through these strategic initiatives, Turkana County is positioning itself as a hub for sustainable business growth, leveraging partnerships to unlock new economic opportunities.
