The long-awaited relief food distribution exercise has officially kicked off in Turkana South, bringing hope to hundreds of families grappling with the effects of drought and hunger.

The exercise was presided over by Turkana South Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Gideon Ngombongi, Assistant Chief Duncan Ngimare, and the Personal Assistant to Turkana South Member of Parliament, James Lokol.

During the first phase of the distribution, three villages, Nayanae Aekuruchanait and Kapese, benefited from the food aid. The consignment included essential commodities aimed at cushioning vulnerable households from the ongoing food insecurity crisis in the region.

However, the exercise faced major logistical hurdles, particularly in transporting food to remote areas. According to the DCC, he has been forced to use his official Land Cruiser to deliver food supplies to distant villages due to a shortage of transport vehicles.

Despite the challenges, the DCC and MP’s Personal Assistant, James Lokol, assured residents that the exercise will continue as planned, with the next phase targeting far-flung areas such as Kalapata and Locheremoit beginning tomorrow morning.

The relief effort comes amid growing calls from local leaders for the government and humanitarian agencies to scale up interventions in Turkana South, where many families continue to face food shortages worsened by prolonged dry spells.
