Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has announced that over 180,000 bags of fertilizer are being absorbed daily at National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) stores and last-mile outlets across the country.

Speaking during a media briefing, CS Kagwe noted that the government’s efforts to enhance fertilizer distribution are bearing fruit, ensuring farmers can access affordable farm inputs in preparation for the planting season.

“The distribution process is running smoothly, with thousands of bags being picked up daily at various NCPB depots and last-mile distribution centers nationwide,” Kagwe stated.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to boost agricultural productivity and ensure food security amid rising concerns over the cost of farm inputs. The subsidized fertilizer program is expected to benefit thousands of farmers, particularly small-scale growers, by making quality fertilizer more accessible.

Farmers have lauded the initiative, noting that timely access to fertilizer will improve their yields and reduce the financial burden associated with high agricultural costs. However, some have raised concerns about occasional shortages in certain regions, prompting calls for a more efficient distribution mechanism.

The government has assured farmers that measures are in place to streamline the process, with plans to expand distribution channels and enhance last-mile delivery to ensure no farmer is left out.

This development comes as Kenya continues to prioritize agricultural reforms aimed at increasing productivity and reducing reliance on food imports. Stakeholders in the sector have urged continued government support to sustain the momentum and ensure long-term benefits for farmers and the economy at large.
