The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), working in partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Turkana County Government, has announced a fully funded training opportunity for a Certificate in Community Health Nursing at the KMTC Lodwar Campus beginning in March 2026.
The scholarship programme is open to youth from Turkana County as well as refugees living in Kakuma and Kalobeyei, with UNHCR covering the full tuition costs. The initiative aims to strengthen healthcare services in the region by training more community-based nursing professionals.
According to a public notice released on Friday, the programme forms part of ongoing efforts to equip young people with practical medical skills while supporting healthcare delivery in both host communities and refugee settlements.
Students admitted into the programme will undergo two years of professional training at the Lodwar Campus, after which they are expected to contribute to improving healthcare services within local communities and refugee camps.
KMTC noted that the initiative will help address the shortage of trained nursing personnel, particularly in underserved areas such as Turkana and the refugee settlements.

Strengthening Community Healthcare
KMTC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kelly Oluoch said the programme reflects the institution’s commitment to expanding access to professional medical training while supporting community-based healthcare systems.
Graduates of the course will gain skills in community health services, maternal and child healthcare, disease prevention, and public health outreach, enabling them to support healthcare delivery both in Turkana communities and refugee camps.
KMTC, an ISO 9001:2015 certified institution, continues to collaborate with government agencies and international partners such as UNHCR to expand education and training opportunities for vulnerable populations.
The fully funded programme is expected to help bridge the healthcare workforce gap in Turkana and the surrounding refugee settlements, while empowering young people to play an active role in improving health services across the region.
