Kenya’s Maritime Sector on the Rise: PS Geoffrey Kaituko Unveils Transformative Budget Priorities

The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, RT. Hon. Geoffrey Kaituko, has presented the department’s budget priorities for the 2025/26 financial year to the Departmental Committee on Transport and Infrastructure.

During the session, chaired by Ndia MP Hon. George K. Kariuki, the PS outlined strategic budget proposals aimed at positioning Kenya as a premier transshipment hub, expanding training opportunities for maritime graduates, and securing jobs for Kenyan seafarers in global shipping lines.

Key projects highlighted in the budget include:

✅ Construction of a Survival and Training Center at Bandari Maritime Academy – Strengthening Kenya’s capacity to train world-class seafarers.

✅ Lake Victoria Maritime Rescue Project – Enhancing safety and emergency response in one of East Africa’s most crucial water bodies.

✅ Lake Turkana Maritime Transport Project – Transforming trade, connectivity, and economic activities in Northern Kenya and beyond.

✅ Implementation of recently ratified international maritime conventions – Ensuring Kenya remains compliant with global maritime standards and continues to attract international investment in the sector.

This ambitious budget underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging the blue economy for national prosperity. With strategic investments in maritime infrastructure and training, Kenya is well on its way to becoming a leading maritime nation in Africa!
