Julius Kavita: Claims of Hunger Deaths in Turkana Are Misleading Hearsay

Turkana County Commissioner Julius Kavita has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that residents of Turkana are dying of hunger, describing the claims as hearsay and misleading.
Speaking during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations held in Lokiriama, Kavita acknowledged that Turkana County is currently experiencing drought conditions but cautioned against spreading unverified information suggesting people are dying from starvation.
“While it is true that there is drought, let us not spread lies that people are dying of starvation,” Kavita said, warning that such claims could cause unnecessary panic among residents and the wider public.
The county commissioner noted that the national government has already delivered sufficient food supplies to the region and that distribution to affected households is set to begin.
He assured residents that relevant government agencies are coordinating relief efforts to ensure food reaches vulnerable communities, urging the public to rely on official communication channels for accurate updates.
Turkana has faced recurrent droughts in recent years, with government and humanitarian partners continuing relief interventions to cushion residents from the impact of prolonged dry spells.
