A fierce political contest is unfolding in Mbeere North Constituency, Embu County, as Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and former Deputy President and Democratic Party (DP) leader Rigathi Gachagua pledge to camp in the region until their preferred candidates secure victory in the upcoming by-election.

The by-election, scheduled for November 27, 2025, has set the stage for a dramatic showdown between the two political heavyweights as each seeks to demonstrate influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Deputy President Kindiki is backing Leonard Wamuthende, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate, in a bid to strengthen the party’s presence in the constituency.

On the other side, Gachagua is supporting Newton Karish, the Democratic Party (DP) candidate associated with former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi. Gachagua has vowed to remain on the ground in Mbeere North until his preferred candidate wins.

The by-election has also attracted two independent candidates: Duncan Mbui and Josiah Thiriku, adding more competition to an already intense race.

As campaign teams traverse villages and trading centres, Mbeere North has become the centre of one of the most anticipated political clashes of the year. With the election drawing closer, political temperatures are rising as the country waits to see who will blink first between Gachagua and Kindiki.
