Alfie Haaland, father of Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, has taken a swipe at Arsenal following their emphatic 5-1 victory over the reigning Premier League champions on Sunday.
The Gunners wasted no time asserting their dominance, with Martin Ødegaard firing them ahead just 104 seconds into the match. Erling Haaland briefly restored parity in the 55th minute, but Arsenal responded almost immediately as Thomas Partey put them back in front just a minute later.
Teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly extended the lead with his first senior goal for the club, before mocking Haaland by imitating the City forward’s signature yoga-style celebration—perhaps a response to Haaland’s infamous “stay humble” remark to Mikel Arteta after their fiery 2-2 draw at the Etihad earlier this season.
Kai Havertz added Arsenal’s fourth goal with 14 minutes remaining, and substitute Ethan Nwaneri put the finishing touches on a stunning performance with a brilliant strike in stoppage time.
The match had all the ingredients of a growing rivalry, as Arsenal outclassed, outmuscled, and outthought a City side that has dominated the Premier League in recent years. Tensions between the two clubs have been building, fueled by Haaland’s comments to Arteta earlier in the season and his dismissive attitude toward Lewis-Skelly. This time, the 18-year-old midfielder provided a resounding response on the pitch.
However, Alfie Haaland was quick to take a jab at Arsenal’s lack of recent silverware. After Arsenal’s official X account posted a celebratory message captioned “This team” following their dominant display, Haaland sarcastically replied: “This team that wins everything. Ehhhhh, not.”
Despite Haaland Sr.’s dig, Arsenal will likely remain unfazed, having delivered a statement victory on the pitch. The result moves them back up to second place, six points behind league leaders Liverpool, while City remain fourth—now a staggering 15 points off the pace.
