Moi Garden, a place where many street families in Turkana gather for survival, turned into a space of joy and hope yesterday, thanks to the efforts of Patty Carol and Palek Purity together with their team of volunteers.

From early morning, the group prepared chapatis with the children, laughing and chatting as they cooked over open fires. The smell of fresh bread filled the air, and for many kids who had gone days without a proper meal, every bite was more than food, it was love and care.

“I have never felt like someone cares about me,” said Akiru, a 10-year-old girl, smiling as she rolled out her first chapati with Carol.

Instead of just giving donations, Carol and Palek spent the day with the children, listening to their stories, playing games, singing, and dancing. For a few hours, Moi Garden was no longer just a survival ground but a home full of laughter, music, and belonging.

Carol said the mission was more than filling empty stomachs. “Food is important, but showing these children they are valued and loved is what really matters,” she explained. Palek added, “When we gather like this, it’s about family. These kids need to know they matter.”

But for many in the community, the work Carol and Palek are doing is not easy.
“It’s very hard to interact with street children. Most people fear them because they think they are rough or dangerous,” said Luka Ebei, a boda boda rider in Lodwar.
Another resident, Janet Etabo, added: “Many of us pass by these children every day without even greeting them. It’s not easy to sit with them, eat with them, or play with them.”

Others, however, praised the initiative. Peter Ekidor, a local trader, said Carol and Palek are setting an example. “These two ladies are doing something meaningful. They are showing the children love, and that can change their lives. They make them feel they belong.”

The event comes at a time when Turkana town is seeing an increasing influx of families and children on the streets. Many are struggling with hunger, rejection, and lack of support.

Community members are now being urged to join hands with Carol and Palek in their mission to bring real change. Their message is simple: every child deserves to be seen, every life deserves care, and together we can restore hope.
