Banditry Back in Kainuk Amid Plans to Review Dusk-to-Dawn Curfew

Last Updated on August 2, 2025 by Turkana County News Online
Tension has resurfaced in Kainuk following a daring broad-daylight bandit attack by suspected Pokot raiders, leaving one person injured and several residents in fear.
The assailants sprayed bullets indiscriminately at Kainuk Centre before fleeing the scene. The injured victim is currently receiving treatment at Kainuk Dispensary and is expected to be referred to Lodwar County Referral Hospital (LCRH) for specialized care.
This latest incident comes barely a week after armed bandits raided a local village, stealing at least 350 livestock and killing one person in a separate attack.
The spike in insecurity comes as the government considers revising the existing dusk-to-dawn curfew in the region.
During the recent Julwaa la Usalama Turkana edition, interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen pledged to push for the adjustment of the current curfew hours from 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m. to a later 10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m., citing the need to support the local economy while balancing security.
However, locals are now questioning whether the curfew review is premature amid the fresh wave of banditry or the curfew was commercialized.
Security agencies in the region are yet to issue an official statement on the latest attack, even as leaders from both Turkana and West Pokot counties continue to appeal for calm and renewed peace efforts.
