StarTimes’ PANG Rolls Out DTT Television Pilot in Kakuma to Boost Digital Access in Turkana

The Pan Africa Network Group (PANG), a subsidiary of StarTimes Kenya, has launched a digital terrestrial television (DTT) pilot project in Kakuma, Turkana County, in a move aimed at expanding broadcast infrastructure and enhancing digital inclusion in one of Kenya’s most underserved regions.

The initiative, supported by the Universal Service Fund and overseen by the Communications Authority of Kenya, seeks to extend DTT services to remote areas where commercial broadcasters have been slow to invest due to high infrastructure costs.

By targeting regions like Turkana, the project is expected to bridge long-standing gaps in access to information, bringing reliable television and radio services closer to communities that have historically experienced limited coverage.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement in Turkana County, PANG General Manager Tamima Ibrahim described the pilot as a key step in extending broadcast signal distribution to frontier markets.

She noted that once fully operational, the project could enable residents to access over 500 television and radio channels, opening up opportunities for news consumption, educational programming, and public awareness.

“Infrastructure investment in underserved regions like Turkana creates long-term value for the entire broadcast ecosystem,” said Ibrahim. “By expanding signal reach, we are laying the foundation for increased content access, growth in advertising, and broader participation in the digital economy.”

Beyond improving access to media, the initiative is also expected to stimulate local economic activity by enhancing connectivity and enabling communities to engage more actively in digital services.

The rollout underscores growing efforts to ensure equitable access to communication infrastructure across Kenya, particularly in marginalized and hard-to-reach areas.
