President William Ruto has unveiled a national compensation framework targeting individuals who were injured or lost their lives during protests and demonstrations in Kenya from 2017 to date.
The 120-day program, announced through a presidential proclamation dated August 6 and made public today, seeks to provide reparations to both civilians and security officers affected by the unrest across the country over the past eight years.
“I, William Samoei Ruto, President and Commander in Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, in exercise of the authority vested in me by the Constitution, do hereby establish a coordinating framework for compensation of victims of protests and riots, which shall be vested under the Executive Office of the President,” reads part of the proclamation.
The program will be implemented under the Executive Office of the President in collaboration with key state agencies, including the Office of the Attorney General, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, the National Treasury, and other relevant departments.
According to the announcement, the new framework aims to deliver justice to families and individuals who have borne the brunt of political and social unrest over the years.
