The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has strongly condemned the arrest of journalist Peter Mwita Maseke and warned against growing intimidation targeting members of the media.

In a statement, the Council called for Mwita, a journalist working with Alshifa Media Group based in Mombasa County, to be released on free bond following his detention by police under what it described as unclear circumstances.

According to MCK, Mwita is being held in connection with information linked to the organisation of criminal gangs operating in the Kisauni area of Mombasa County, which was circulated on the WhatsApp platform. The journalist had earlier been summoned to record a statement on December 30, 2025, before being arrested a day later.

The Council termed Mwita’s arrest over journalistic work related to matters of public interest as a blatant attempt to silence whistleblowers and push journalists into self-censorship. It cautioned police against misusing their powers or denying Kenyans their legitimate rights, including the right to bail.

MCK further reminded both national and county governments that Articles 33 and 34 of the Constitution guarantee freedom of expression and freedom of the media, describing these rights as fundamental pillars of a democratic society.

The Council also raised concern over the use of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act to intimidate and harass journalists, noting that any attempt to compel Mwita to reveal his sources or to silence him would amount to a violation of professional standards and the Constitution.

MCK reaffirmed its commitment to defending media freedom and urged authorities to respect the role of journalists in serving the public interest.
