The Social Health Authority (SHA) has announced that it will take over the management of medical cover for officers of the National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Prisons Service (KPS), including their dependants, effective April 1, 2026.
In a notice dated March 30, 2026, SHA confirmed that the transition will take effect at 12:00 a.m., with the current medical cover remaining valid until 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2026 under the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund.
SHA assured officers that the transition will be smooth and seamless, with no interruption in access to healthcare services. Officers currently admitted in hospitals will continue receiving treatment without disruption under the new arrangement.
To facilitate the transition, officers have been urged to ensure that all declared dependants are properly updated in the system. They can do so by dialing *147#, visiting www.sha.go.ke or www.afyayangu.go.ke, or using the AfyaYangu App.
The Authority also noted that for patients receiving treatment in facilities not contracted by SHA, arrangements will be made to transfer them to approved facilities to ensure continuity of care.
SHA has further established a support system, including liaison officers in all counties and a dedicated toll-free hotline (0800 720 601) to handle inquiries. Additional support will be provided through designated contact persons within NPS and KPS offices.
Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mercy Mwangangi reaffirmed SHA’s commitment to ensuring efficient service delivery and a smooth transition for all affected officers and their families.
