The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is pursuing graft cases against 16 governors — five current and 11 former — over allegations of money laundering, embezzlement, and conflict of interest. The commission is also probing Sh1.6 billion worth of corruption cases involving 822 county officials.
EACC has already forwarded files of four governors to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. They include Kiambu’s Kimani Wamatangi, Bomet’s Hillary Barchok, former Bungoma governor Wycliffe Wangamati, and Marsabit’s Mohamud Ali.
1. Kiambu: Governor Wamatangi is accused of a Sh1.27 billion tender racket involving relatives, with firms allegedly controlled by his family receiving over Sh615 million.
2. Bomet: Governor Barchok allegedly orchestrated a Sh152 million scandal through companies linked to his allies, with EACC tracing kickbacks into his personal accounts.
3. Bungoma: Former governor Wangamati is accused of a Sh70 million scheme involving relatives and shell companies that secured inflated road contracts.
4. Marsabit: Governor Mohamud Ali and his family allegedly benefited from a Sh728 million procurement scandal, with firms tied to his household securing Sh360 million.
EACC says more files involving two other sitting governors and 10 former county chiefs are still under investigation and will be forwarded to the DPP once completed.
