IEBC Debunks Fake Press Release on Parliament Dissolution

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has moved swiftly to discredit a sophisticated fake news campaign, publicly flagging a fabricated press release that falsely claimed the agency was preparing for a full dissolution of Parliament.
The fraudulent document, which has been circulating online under the guise of an official IEBC “PRESS RELEASE,” bore the commission’s logo and was falsely attributed to its Chairperson, Erastus Edung Ethekon. It detailed a specific constitutional process allegedly triggered by an ongoing Supreme Court case, creating a wave of misinformation and anxiety.
In a genuine alert, the IEBC branded the detailed document as #FakeNews, warning the public and media against amplifying the false information.
The fake statement had authoritatively, but incorrectly, claimed that the IEBC was “fully constituted and operational” and prepared to hold fresh elections for all parliamentary seats within 90 days if the Supreme Court ruled to dissolve Parliament. It cited specific constitutional articles to lend an air of authenticity to its claims.
