As schools reopen on Monday, January, 2024, the State through the Ministry of Education (MoE) has disbursed Ksh. 48.4 billion capitation funds for the public primary and secondary schools.
Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the release amount represents 50 percent of the total capitation for academic year 2025.
Primary schools will get Ksh 4.1 billion, while Ksh 28.1 Billion has been disbursed to Day Secondary Schools.
Day Junior Secondary schools will receive Ksh 15.3 billion.
According to Education Hub publication, the early release of the capitation is to ensure smooth running of the schools. In the past, schools grappled with financial challenges due to delayed release of the funds.
The money will ensure that public schools will be able to keep learners in school.
“We are working with the National Treasury for the release of exchequer to facilitate timely disbursement,” the CS said.
He added that the government will release 30 percent of the capitation in Term Two and remaining 20 percent in Third Term.
Ogamba added that the construction of 16,000 classrooms is at 93 percent to facilitate the seamless transition of learners to grade 9 who are transiting to Junior secondary schools.
He further asked school heads to construct temporary structures to accommodate learners where classrooms have not been completed. They have also been asked to merge streams to create space for new learners in grade 9.
CS Ogemba also added that 9.9 Milliom textbooks have been dispatched to all schools across the country.
“The distribution is expected to be completed my Monday, January 6, 2025.” He said.
