Fresh Twist: Mystery Surrounds Death of Sex Worker at Umoja Lodge in Nakuru

A wave of panic swept through Nakuru’s Lee Njiru Road on Monday afternoon after screams erupted from Umoja Lodge, located within the heart of the city. The body of a woman, believed to be a sex worker known to her friends as Zuchu, was discovered lifeless on a bed in one of the rooms.
Charity Wanjiru, a close friend of the deceased, recounted their final hours together in an emotional interview. She revealed that the two had spent Sunday evening drinking with a group of friends before Zuchu was approached by a man described as a client.
“He was chewing muguka, which Zuchu didn’t like, so he bought her a drink instead,” Wanjiru recalled. “Later, we invited her for a meal, but she chose to stay with him.”
Wanjiru explained that the pair later joined her again at a different entertainment spot, where Zuchu was treated to another drink. Everything appeared normal at that point.
“As the night progressed, Zuchu and the man left together. I stayed behind with our friends. The next thing I heard was that her body had been found in a lodge room the following morning,” she said.
Describing Zuchu as a supportive and kind-hearted mother, Wanjiru expressed grief, saying she often stood by her colleagues despite the dangers they faced in their line of work.
Emilly Nekesa, a representative from Smart Ladies—a Nakuru-based group advocating for sex workers’ rights—condemned the incident and demanded accountability.
“We want justice for Zuchu. No one deserves to die in such a brutal way,” Nekesa asserted. “The lodge management must release details of the person who checked in with her. Guests are usually required to submit ID and contact details. If the transaction was cashless, that’s an even stronger lead to trace the suspect.”
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding Zuchu’s tragic death.
