The race for the Turkana gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election is gaining early momentum, with a new opinion poll revealing a tightening contest among key political figures in the county.

According to the latest survey conducted by Swiss Poll International, incumbent Governor Dr. Jeremiah Lomorukai is currently leading the pack with 32 percent support. However, Loima MP Hon. Dr. Protus Akujah is emerging as a formidable challenger, closely trailing with 27 percent, setting the stage for a highly competitive race.

The poll further shows Turkana South MP Hon. Dr. Ariko Namoit in third place with 16 percent, maintaining a notable presence in the race. Turkana Senator. James Lomenen follows with 10 percent, while Turkana North MP Hon. Ekwom Nabuin trails with 8 percent support.

The survey also indicates that 6 percent of respondents remain undecided, highlighting a crucial voting bloc that could ultimately influence the direction of the race. An additional 1 percent expressed preference for other candidates outside the main contenders.

Swiss Poll International conducted the survey with a sample size of 1,056 respondents, with a margin of error of ±3.01 percent at a 95 percent confidence level, suggesting a credible snapshot of the current political landscape in Turkana County.

The findings suggest that while Governor Lomorukai currently holds an advantage, the gap between him and his closest challenger, Akujah, remains narrow, leaving room for shifts as political campaigns intensify.

The findings point to a dynamic and evolving contest, with Governor Lomorukai maintaining an early lead but facing increasing pressure from his long-term political rival, MP Akujah. Both are scrambling for votes from their strongholds in Loima Sub-County, where support appears to be steadily consolidating.

Political observers note that with more than a year remaining before the 2027 General Election, alliances, campaign strategies, and shifting voter sentiments will play a critical role in determining the main contenders.

Analysts argue that the significant number of undecided voters, coupled with the dynamic nature of local politics, could still influence the final outcome.

As political alignments begin to form and campaigns gradually gain momentum, Turkana’s gubernatorial race is expected to remain one of the most closely watched contests in the region.
