A high-stakes political showdown is set to unfold in Turkana County as the County Assembly resumes tomorrow, February 11, 2025. Speaker Christopher Nakuleu faces potential impeachment, a move that has intensified his already strained relationship with Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai.

What makes this battle even more gripping is its deeply personal dimension—Nakuleu’s daughter is married to Lomorukai’s son, making the impeachment fight not just a test of political loyalty but also a family dilemma that could ripple far beyond the walls of the assembly.

A Family’s Plea Rejected

As tensions peaked, a delegation from Nakuleu’s family recently sought an audience with Governor Lomorukai, hoping to broker peace and prevent his removal. However, according to a source who sought anonymity, the Governor declined to meet them, directing them instead to the county assembly leadership.

“Let them approach the house leadership,” Lomorukai reportedly said, signaling his unwillingness to intervene in what he insists is an internal assembly matter. His response, however, has been interpreted by political observers as either a strategic distancing or a quiet nod to the impeachment efforts.

The Political Storm Brewing

This power struggle has been simmering for months. In December 2024, an impeachment motion against Nakuleu was mysteriously delayed after the county assembly clerk—who was responsible for receiving the motion—was nowhere to be found. Furious MCAs accused Nakuleu of orchestrating the delay to buy time and rally support.

In response, the MCAs vowed to intensify their efforts, not only pushing forward the impeachment but also targeting the clerk, whom they accused of sabotaging legislative processes.

Now, with at least 38 MCAs already signed onto the motion, the momentum behind Nakuleu’s ouster appears to be gaining ground.

Behind-the-Scenes Power Plays

Governor Lomorukai, once seen as a key mediator in Turkana’s political disputes, now seems to be stepping back. A source close to the matter revealed that the Governor has, for a long time, been mediating conflicts involving Nakuleu but is now under growing political pressure to let the process take its course.

“The Governor has tried to resolve these issues privately, but Nakuleu’s political maneuvering has made it difficult. This time, he is letting the assembly decide,” the source disclosed.

Adding another layer to the drama, ODM party leader Raila Odinga recently held a high-stakes closed-door meeting with prominent Turkana leaders, including former Governor Josephat Nanok and CS Beatrice Askul. Reports indicate that Odinga tasked Nanok and Askul with spearheading negotiations to calm the storm between Lomorukai and Nakuleu.

While the details of the meeting remain closely guarded, it underscores how far-reaching this crisis has become—drawing national political figures into a battle that is no longer just about county governance but also about shifting alliances in Kenya’s broader political landscape.

Politics vs. Family Ties: What’s Next?

What sets this crisis apart from other political battles is the unique intersection of politics and personal relationships. Lomorukai and Nakuleu are not just political adversaries—they are also bound by family ties. If Nakuleu is impeached, the impact could extend beyond the corridors of power, straining relations between two families that have been united by marriage.

With the Turkana County Assembly set to resume tomorrow, February 11, 2025, all eyes will be on the proceedings.

▪️Will Nakuleu leverage his family ties to survive the political onslaught?

▪️Will Lomorukai’s decision to distance himself be seen as neutrality or silent endorsement of the impeachment?

▪️And how will Raila Odinga’s intervention shape the final outcome?

For now, the stage is set for one of Turkana’s most defining political moments in recent years—one that could reshape not only the county’s leadership but also the balance of power in the region for years to come.
