Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna reads mischief in the current Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) debate in the country.
While speaking at Citizen TV on Thursday morning, Sifuna said the debate was brought forthwith to change the focus of the Nation’s from real issues.
Sifuna said the decision of the court was deliberately misunderstood.
“The courts didn’t say that LGBTQ community have a right to marry, just the right of association . This discussion is a total distraction from real issues affecting Kenyans,” Sifuna said
He added: “We want to move the focus of the Nation from the kitchen where people are unable to feed their families, to the bedroom.”
On Monday, the Supreme Court of Kenya ruled that the LGBTQ community have the right to association.
The judgment brought to a close a nearly decade-long court battle and debate on the rights accorded to gays and homosexuals in the country.
The judges in their majority judgment said the decision by the lower courts to deny the members of the gay community in Kenya their right to register as a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) was discriminatory.
