On Tuesday, the National Assembly turned its focus to Turkana County, where MPs voiced deep concern over rising insecurity and politically motivated violence.
Turkana South MP Dr. John Ariko Namoit made a passionate contribution on the floor, highlighting what he described as “a worrying state of affairs” in the county. His remarks were strongly backed by Turkana North MP Paul Nabuin, who insisted the issue was far beyond local politics.
“This is not merely a matter of local politics, as some may perceive; the truth is that insecurity remains a serious concern. Leaders and other citizens who voice their dissatisfaction with the county leadership are increasingly exposed to threats and intimidation. This poses a danger to democracy, public safety, and the wellbeing of our people.” Nabuin said
Ariko narrated shocking incidents, including the abduction of his constituency manager, Mr. Sammy Ekitela, who was allegedly seized by goons at Cherina’s Hotel, held in an undisclosed location for several days, and later found badly maimed.
Adding to the controversy, Ariko and Ekitela—together with six others—were subsequently arrested at an entertainment joint in Eldoret, charged in connection with the Cherina’s Hotel Incident, and detained for three days.
The MP further recounted how, during the burial of the late Deputy Speaker of the Turkana County Assembly, Hon. Philip Ekuwam, hired goons confronted him and disarmed his bodyguard in full view of mourners.
He also decried the rise of gangs allegedly erecting illegal roadblocks in Lodwar town, warning that residents and leaders who oppose the current county administration face brutal retaliation.
Ariko did not shy away from pointing fingers, accusing Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai of undermining security institutions in Turkana.
“The Governor is more of a base commander than a county leader,” Ariko alleged, recalling incidents where goons even attacked security officers. He further claimed that Governor Lomorukai openly stated he would only work with the OCS, boasting that he had already secured his loyalty and would not engage with other security agencies.
Ariko urged Parliament and national security organs to intervene urgently, warning that the lives, freedoms, and democratic space of Turkana residents are increasingly under siege.
