Is Turkana Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai Warming Up to Seek Re-election on Wetang’ula’s Ford Kenya Party?

Speculation is rife among Turkana residents after National Assembly Speaker and Ford Kenya party leader Moses Wetang’ula on Monday hosted Turkana County Secretary Amb. Dr. Richard Titus Ekai at his Parliament office. Accompanying him was the Governor’s Legal Advisor, Mr. Ekiru Tulele, a close ally of Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai.

Governor Lomorukai, who has been working closely with the Kenya Kwanza administration since assuming office in 2022, is now rumored to be eyeing re-election on a political party aligned with the ruling coalition.

Chances of him seeking re-election on the ODM ticket appear slim following his fallout with Turkana South MP Ariko Namoit, who played a key role in Lomorukai’s 2022 gubernatorial victory. Both Ariko Namoit and Turkana North MP Ekwom Nabuin have already declared interest in contesting for the governorship under the ODM party in 2027.

On the other hand, President Ruto’s UDA party in Turkana has also begun attracting potential gubernatorial candidates, including Loima MP Protus Akujah and former Turkana Central MP John Lodepe. This growing interest makes it unlikely for Governor Lomorukai to secure the UDA ticket unless he competes in and wins the party’s nomination process.
